Crop/Soil Science

Introduction

The Department of Crop/Soil Science undertakes both Undergraduate and Post Graduate Degree Programmes.

The Undergraduate programme offers Bachelor of Agriculture (B. Agric) degree in Crop Science or Soil Science while the Post Graduate Programme offers Post graduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Science (MSc.), Master of Pedo-Environmental Technology (MPET), Master of Pedo-Environmental Management Science (MPEMS) and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Crop Science, Soil Science, Environmental Crop Science, Pedo-Environmental Technology and Pedo-Environmental Management.

Post Graduate Students who major in Crop Science specialize in any of the following Areas of specialization, Crop Production, Crop Physiology, Farming Systems, Crop Breeding, Crop Protection and Environmental Crop Science, while those of Soil Science specialize in Soil Chemistry, Soil Physics, Soil Fertility and Environmental Pollution and Control, Soil Microbiology and Biochemistry, Soil Mineralogy, Soil Genesis, Morphology and Classification, Pedo-Environmental Technology and Pedo-Environmental Management.

Each of the programmes (undergraduate or Postgraduate) involves a research activity concluded with a project or a thesis. All graduate degree programmes are individualized to suit students’ interests, background and goals but are closely supervised by a Major supervisor in students’ area of concentration and other members representing other minor fields who determines course requirements based on the students’ initial training and career goals.

Philosophy

The Philosophy of the Department is to train high level manpower who will be equipped in the challenges of a changing Nigeria in the application of Science and Technology for the welfare of the citizenry and in the ability to sustain self in the environment.

Objectives

The objectives of the Department are to produce trained manpower to effectively mobilize the rural communities for increased agricultural productivity, engage in research, that would provide relevant and appropriate solutions to the country’s agricultural and rural development problems and improve agricultural productivity.

Produce manpower to take up employment as Technologists, Consultants, Teachers anywhere in the world and particularly Nigeria in any aspect of Agriculture and related areas in natural conservation, Environmental issues, water pollution control and recycling/waste management and pedo-environmental research.

Produce agriculturists who can profitably put their skills into operation by establishing and operating their own farming enterprises, and also relevant in Environmental matters.
